Off-peak and dual fuel programs are one of the best deals in rural Minnesota. Your co-op or utility gives you a lower rate for electric heat or water heating, and in exchange it can switch that load off during peak times while a backup heat source carries the house.
Getting the discount depends on the wiring: the right meter setup, a load control receiver, and controls that switch cleanly between electric and backup heat. We wire and repair these systems for homes and farms across west central Minnesota.
- Dual fuel and plenum heater wiring
- Electric thermal storage heat
- Off-peak electric water heaters
- Load control receivers and contactor enclosures
- Coordination with your co-op or utility on meter and receiver requirements
Who runs these programs here
Depending on where you live, your power comes from an electric co-op such as Agralite, Kandiyohi Power or Minnesota Valley Co-op, from Otter Tail Power or Xcel Energy, or from a municipal utility like Willmar or Marshall. Each has its own off-peak rules, meter setups and rebates. We'll check what your provider requires before we start, so the job qualifies the first time.
Real job: rebuilding load control in Canby
When a Canby homeowner added an EV charger, his existing off-peak water heater and load control receiver had to be reworked. We built a new outdoor isolation enclosure with dual contactors - one for the EV, one for the water heater - so both loads are controlled by the utility signal. Read how we did it.
When off-peak systems stop working
Common calls include a plenum heater that never comes on, a water heater that runs cold after a control period, and a receiver that was removed or bypassed during a remodel. We troubleshoot the receiver, contactors and controls and get the system switching properly again.
