Lake Home, Cabin & Dock Electrical in West Central Minnesota

Dock and boat lift power, cabin panels and seasonal checks, done to code by a licensed Master Electrician.

Water and electricity need more care than anything else we wire. A dock outlet, a boat lift or a shoreline light that's wired wrong can put current in the water around it, and you can't see it. Lake places also tend to collect wiring over the years: an extension cord to the lift, a cabin panel from the 1970s, a feeder buried who-knows-how-deep to the shed.

Bright Haven Electric wires docks, boat lifts and shoreline power, upgrades cabin and lake home panels, and checks seasonal places before you open them up or close them for winter. We work on lakes across west central Minnesota, from Lake Minnewaska and Green Lake to Big Stone Lake, and we pull the state permit on work that needs one.

  • Dock, boat lift and shoreline power with ground-fault protection
  • Cabin and lake home panel upgrades and replacements
  • Underground feeders to docks, sheds, garages and guest cabins
  • Heat tape, well pump and freeze-protection circuits
  • Spring opening and fall closing electrical checks

Dock and boat lift power

Docks and boat lifts need ground-fault protection, weatherproof equipment rated for wet locations, and wiring that's protected where it runs down the bank and out onto the dock. The electrical code has a whole article for docks and marinas because the risks are different from a garage or yard.

Electric shock drowning happens when current leaks into fresh water from a faulty dock, lift or boat. A swimmer nearby can be paralyzed by it without anyone seeing a thing. Ground-fault protection is the main defense, and it only works if it's installed and tested properly. If a breaker or GFCI on your dock keeps tripping, don't reset it and walk away. That's the protection telling you something is leaking. Call us.

Cabin panels and old wiring

A lot of cabins started as weekend places and were added onto for decades. We often see small panels with no open spaces, missing grounds, ungrounded outlets and splices hidden in walls. We'll look at what's there, tell you what's a real safety issue and what can wait, and put it in writing.

If you're turning a seasonal cabin into a year-round home, the electrical load usually goes up a lot: electric heat, a bigger well pump, a water heater, an EV. We'll check whether the service can handle it and plan the upgrade if it can't.

Opening and closing for the season

Mice, frost and storms are hard on cabin wiring. Before you open a place up in spring, we can check the panel, outlets, GFCIs, the well pump circuit and the dock power, so the first weekend isn't spent chasing a tripped breaker. In fall we'll make sure heat tape and freeze-protection circuits are on their own GFCI-protected circuits and working before you leave.

Feeders to docks, sheds and guest cabins

Power to outbuildings and the shoreline should run in a proper underground feeder, buried to code depth, with a disconnect where it's needed. A buried extension cord or a run of the wrong cable is common at lake places and it's a shock and fire risk. We trench, set conduit and wire it properly, and we can add lighting and outlets along the way.

Lake Home, Cabin & Dock Electrical FAQ

Does my dock need ground-fault protection?

Yes. Dock and boat lift power needs ground-fault protection under the electrical code, and it's the main protection against shock in the water. If yours doesn't have it, or it keeps tripping, have it checked.

My dock GFCI keeps tripping. Can I just replace it?

A GFCI that trips usually means current is leaking somewhere - a damaged cord, a wet connection, a failing lift motor. Replacing it won't fix that. We find where the leak is and fix it.

Can you check my cabin before I open it for the season?

Yes. We check the panel, outlets, GFCIs, well pump circuit and dock power so the place is ready when you get there. Call in early spring to get on the schedule.

Can you run power to my dock or shed?

Yes. We install underground feeders to docks, sheds, garages and guest cabins, buried to code depth, with the right disconnects and ground-fault protection.

Which lakes do you work on?

We work on lakes across west central Minnesota, including the Glenwood and Starbuck area, the Spicer and New London area, Big Stone Lake and lakes around Benson, Montevideo and Appleton. Call and we'll let you know if you're in our area.
