Dedicated Basement & Kitchen Circuits – Redwood Falls, MN

When Josh in Redwood Falls, Minnesota needed dedicated power for his basement utility equipment and under-sink kitchen appliances, he reached out to Bright Haven Electric. Older homes across Redwood County weren’t built for the electrical loads of modern appliances, water conditioning systems, and power equipment. Over time, that often leads to overloaded circuits, nuisance tripping, and dangerous extension cords running across basement floors.

Our goal for this project was simple: install dedicated, heavy-duty circuits directly to where power was needed, upgrade the home to modern Dual-Function AFCI/GFCI protection, clean up the main breaker panel, and have every circuit inspected and certified by the State of Minnesota.

The Problem – Extension Cords and Shared Utility Lines

In many older basements, homeowners find themselves relying on long extension cords to run essential equipment like water softeners, sump pumps, and workshop tools. While extension cords might seem like an easy temporary fix, using them as permanent wiring creates real safety risks – including overheating, voltage drop, physical cable damage, and fire hazards.

Josh’s home had multiple basement appliances and kitchen utility needs sharing existing general-purpose circuits. To bring everything up to the 2026 National Electrical Code (NEC), we designed a clean layout of dedicated 20-amp circuits run in armored metal-clad (MC) cable.

The Scope of Work

We completed a full electrical remediation package to give Josh dedicated, reliable power throughout the basement and kitchen:

  • Dedicated 20A Dual-Function Kitchen Circuit – Installed armored MC cable down from the main floor under-sink area into a steel junction box. Protected at the panel with a new 20-amp Dual-Function (AFCI/GFCI) breaker to provide combined arc-fault and ground-fault protection.
  • Dedicated 20A GFCI Water Treatment Receptacle – Surface-mounted an industrial-grade steel receptacle box with GFCI protection on the basement foundation wall, wired directly adjacent to the EcoWater softener and water heater. This completely eliminated the extension cord run.
  • Dedicated 20A Heavy-Duty Utility Circuit – Extended a dedicated 20-amp circuit in armored MC cable securely strapped along joists and structural pillars, terminating in a steel 4-square quad receptacle box for basement tools and heavy utility loads.
  • Breaker Panel Upgrades & Torque Verification – Installed new circuit breakers into the GE load center, verified all terminal screw torques to manufacturer specifications using calibrated torque tools, and updated the panel schedule.
  • Permitted & Inspected – Fully permitted with the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry and passed final state electrical inspection.

Why Armored MC Cable in Basements?

In unfinished basements and utility spaces, standard Romex (NM-B cable) can’t simply be left exposed on masonry or concrete walls without special protection. One of the biggest advantages of armored metal-clad (MC) cable is that it can be fastened and surface-mounted directly onto concrete foundation walls and structural masonry pillars without needing to frame out stud walls or run rigid pipe.

Its interlocking aluminum armor delivers heavy-duty mechanical protection against physical damage, snags, and pests, making it an ideal, code-compliant choice for clean surface-mount runs across concrete and ceiling joists.

Passed State of Minnesota Electrical Inspection

At Bright Haven Electric, we pull state electrical permits on every eligible project so our customers know the work is safe, fully compliant with Minnesota law, and officially inspected. On July 17, 2026, the state electrical inspector reviewed the completed installation and officially issued a passing final inspection.
