200A Service Upgrade & Dedicated Circuits – Maynard, MN

We recently completed a comprehensive electrical modernization for a homeowner in Maynard, MN. The home’s existing electrical infrastructure was outdated, crowded, and presented several National Electrical Code (NEC) clearance violations that we needed to address. We upgraded the entire service to 200 amps and added several new dedicated circuits to improve safety and functionality.

Resolving Serious Safety Hazards

The original service had two major safety issues. First, the old overhead service mast ran straight down the exterior wall directly between two operable windows. This is a severe NEC violation, as it placed high-voltage lines within arm’s reach of anyone opening a window. Second, the old electric meter was crowded right up against the gas meter regulator, violating utility clearance requirements.

We resolved both issues by completely relocating the service entry. We installed a rigid steel mast further to the right, safely away from the windows, and routed it into a brand new Siemens 200A meter socket and emergency disconnect combo unit mounted well away from the gas equipment.

200A Main Panel Replacement

Inside the basement, the old 100A Square D QO panel was overcrowded, lacked a main disconnect, and had double-tapped breakers with no spare capacity left. We completely replaced this setup with a modern Siemens 200A load center.

Dedicated Circuits and Additional Upgrades

With the new 200A capacity, we were able to add several dedicated branch circuits that the home desperately needed:

• Washer & Dryer Nook: We installed a heavy-duty surface-mounted 30A 120/240V dryer receptacle (NEMA 14-30R) and a dedicated 20A washer receptacle, fed with neat vertical MC armor runs.
• Under-Sink Power: We ran a new dedicated 20A circuit in MC cable to an under-sink handy box for a dishwasher or garbage disposal.
• Bath & Panel Upgrades: We installed dual-function AFCI/GFCI breakers for existing circuits and corrected an improperly wired upstairs bathroom outlet.
• Garage Isolation: We safely disconnected and isolated a dangerous, ungrounded vintage feeder line going to the detached garage.
